How to Wash Graphic Tees So the Print Does Not Crack

A good graphic tee should outlast the print on it, but most people destroy the print long before the shirt wears out. It is almost always the same two mistakes.

The two things that kill prints

Heat. Hot water and high dryer heat are what cause cracking and peeling. The print and the fabric expand at different rates, and repeated heat cycling breaks the bond between them.

Friction. Washing a printed shirt right side out means the graphic rubs against everything else in the load for forty minutes. Turn it inside out and the fabric takes the abrasion instead.

The actual rules

Wash cold. Turn it inside out. Tumble dry low or hang dry. Skip the bleach. Do not iron directly on the print, and if you must iron, go inside out on low.

That is genuinely the whole list. Nothing exotic, and it will roughly double the visible life of a graphic.

About shrinkage

This is where fabric matters. A 60/40 cotton poly blend, which is what our standard tees use, barely shrinks. The polyester holds the dimensions.

100% cotton, which is what our Big and Tall line uses, will shrink a little on the first wash, mostly in length. If you are buying tall sizing specifically for the length, wash cold and hang dry the first time rather than tossing it straight in a hot dryer.

Fading

Dark shirts fade from sunlight and detergent, not from the print. Wash with similar colors, use a normal amount of detergent rather than more, and dry inside out when you can.

The shortcut version

Cold water, inside out, low heat, no bleach. Do that and the print will still look right when the collar finally goes.

See what we recommend starting with.
