How Should a Graphic Tee Fit? A Straight Answer

Shirt sizing is not standardized and never has been. A large from one brand is a medium from another and a 2XL from a third. This is why people order their usual size, get something wrong, and blame themselves.

Here is how to actually get it right.

Shoulders first

The shoulder seam should land at the edge of your shoulder, where it starts to curve down into your arm. Not on top of the deltoid, not hanging down your bicep.

This is the one measurement you cannot fix. A shirt too big in the chest just looks relaxed. A shirt with the seam halfway down your arm looks like you borrowed it.

Chest

You want about two to four inches of room total. Pinch the fabric at your ribs. If you can grab a couple inches on each side, you are in the right range. If you can grab a fistful, size down. If you cannot pinch anything, size up.

Length is where most people get burned

The hem should land around mid fly, roughly two to three inches below your belt. Long enough to stay tucked when you raise your arms, short enough that it does not read as a nightshirt.

This is the measurement that fails most often on bigger sizes, because most brands add width without adding length. Which is exactly why tall sizing exists. An XLT adds about two inches of body length over an XL while keeping a similar chest.

The only reliable method

Stop reading size charts against your body. Take a shirt you already own that fits the way you want, lay it flat, and measure two numbers: armpit to armpit, and top of shoulder straight down to hem. Compare those to the product chart.

Takes two minutes and it beats guessing every time.

Fabric changes the answer

Our standard tees are a 60/40 blend that holds its dimensions after washing. Our Big and Tall line is 100% cotton, which will shrink slightly on the first wash, mostly in length. If you are buying tall specifically for the length, wash cold and hang dry the first time.

Athletic build note

If you lift, you already know the problem. Sizing up for the shoulders gives you a tent around the waist. Size for the shoulders and accept some room in the middle, or look for a relaxed fit that is cut straighter through the body.
